Say This, Not That — What Helps vs. Hurts

Say This, Not That — What Helps vs. Hurts

Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling worse… even though the other person meant well?

Most people truly want to help.

And sometimes the words we choose can accidentally make things heavier.

When someone is overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious, language matters more than we realize.

Let’s look at a few gentle shifts.

❌ “Just calm down.”

✅ “I can see you’re really overwhelmed right now.”

“Just calm down” sounds simple.

And when your body is flooded with stress, it can feel impossible.
It shows you’re paying attention.
It names what’s happening without judgment.
The other makes space.

Saying, “I can see you’re really overwhelmed right now,” does something different.

Pause for a moment and notice the difference.

One shuts feelings down.

❌ “Other people have it worse.”

✅ “That sounds really hard.”

Comparing pain rarely makes someone feel better.

It often makes them feel small or guilty for struggling.
You’re acknowledging that this moment feels heavy.

When you say, “That sounds really hard,” you’re not agreeing that everything is hopeless.

And feeling seen can calm the nervous system faster than advice ever will.

❌ “You’ll be fine.”

✅ “Do you want to talk about it?”

“You’ll be fine” tries to reassure.

And it can unintentionally close the door.
It gives control.
It gives space.

“Do you want to talk about it?” opens it.

It gives choice.

And when someone is anxious, having choice matters.

Why These Small Shifts Matter

When someone feels stressed or anxious, they don’t need fixing.
They need understanding.

Quick advice often lands like pressure.
Validation feels like relief.

If you’re the one struggling, it makes sense that surface-level encouragement doesn’t help. You deserve space too.

Even small shifts in language can make a big difference in how safe someone feels.

A Simple Practice You Can Try

Pause for a moment and notice:

  • When someone shares something hard, do you move quickly to solve it?

  • Do you feel uncomfortable with strong emotions?

  • What would it feel like to simply say, “I’m here”?

You don’t have to get the wording perfect. You just have to stay present.

Even small steps can make meaningful change in relationships.
